Don't ask me how, but I accidentally wandered into the Amazon.com forums on Blu-ray and HD-DVD. Man, that shit is hateful. Just a bunch a people with nothing better to do than post smackdown after poorly worded smackdown against the format they like least. They stalk the forums for both formats, too. Every poor newb who wanders into the HD-DVD forum looking for answers is met with "Don't use HD-DVD, it's for lamers." "Don't listen to that Sony shill. HD-DVD will win the format war because Blu-ray has xxxx bad thing that doesn't matter to Joe Consumer. HD-DVD has..." "What kind of idiot are you? Blu-ray has completely unrelated thing that may or may not be true."

What ever happened to having a preference? It's a freakin' movie player, people. It's not a political party. It's not determining the future of your country -- just the future of your living room. Read a fucking book, get some air, get a life. Were I about to buy a player, I think I'd be scared off of HD for a while in both formats with that kind of vitriol flying around.

Geez macreeze. Perspective!

I cannot stand Jack Nicholson. I don't care how many Oscars he's won. I don't care that he's one of the living legends of Hollywood. I don't care that he was in the Best Picture winner this year or any other year.

The man is smarmy. He's a self-involved egotist who mugs shamelessly every time the camera cuts to him (and they do it once every half-hour or something). He thinks he's terribly interesting, and the Oscar people feed that notion every damn year.

He's given some good performances, I'll grant you, but he's not the King of Hollywood. He's a sad little man on a sad little hill, giving grandiose performances and frequently relying on the stock "Jack" character to get him through the day.

This rant brought to you by the Oscars, now with more Al Gore.

I received two Netflix movies in the mail today. It should have been three. Netflix told me that they shipped all three films at the same time, so there's no good reason why all three shouldn't arrive at the same time.

Fine. I get over that annoyance. What I have left are two Farscape S3 discs - 14/15 & 16/17/18. I pop 14/15 in the player and... no go. Tells me there's not even a disc in there. So I grumble, open up the player to check the disc for scratches... and the thing is cracked (something that isn't visible on the label side).

So, to recap. I have one disc not here, one disc that is unplayable, and one disc that I cannot watch without first having seen the disc that is unplayable.

Gr. Argh.

ETA: Reported the disc as damaged and they're sending a new one, but that probably won't arrive until Tuesday at the earliest. Which means I'm Netflix-less this weekend. Gosh, wouldn't it be swell if I owned 250+ movies just in case situations such as this should arise?
