Night of the Doctor minisode
Nov. 14th, 2013 02:32 pmThe BBC has released a minisode prologue for The Day of the Doctor titled "Night of the Doctor".
I had to pause it at around 0:20 so I could squee and flail at
echan, who was very amused by my squeeing and flailing. Then I went back and watched the rest and kept on squeeing and flailing.

Bava vid! Mine mine mine!
Mar. 6th, 2013 12:47 am*ahem* As I said in my con report, the highlight of Escapade was a multisource Mario Bava vid that Franzeska made for me (me me me) that screened at my birthday party.
Franzeska has released the vid to the rest of the world to be appreciated and adored.
However, I feel that I would be remiss in not showing you folks exactly how I received the vid the first time I watched it. Luckily
jumpercut shot video of me reacting to the vid, which I have synced with the video itself and put online. It's below. It starts as just the vid, but my reaction pops up at 0:48 and continues until the end of the vid.

I accept that I am a ridiculous human being (with appalling posture). However, more importantly, Franzeska is made of win.

Escapade 23 Con Report
Feb. 25th, 2013 01:06 pmI went into this Escapade a little apprehensive -- I didn't have the best time last year, although there were bright spots. However, I really had nothing to worry about, as it turns out.
I had such an amazing time this year. A lot of it was just from the fact that it was my second year at the con, but there were other factors. I was staying with roommates this year (
anoel,
elipie, and
kuwdora) who I could hang with. I knew more people. But more importantly, I saw a con that was more open and friendly, even (especially) to the first-timers around us.
( In which I talk about the con )
( In which I talk about the most amazing thing that has ever happened to me at a con and I still can't believe it actually happened )
I just want to give my thanks to the con organizers who did an amazing job. And I am so pleased that I was able to hang out with such a diverse group of folks. Just a small sampling of some of the people who made my weekend more awesome: Franzeska, Elipie, Kuwdora, Anoel,
heresluck,
laurashapiro,
killabeez,
feochadn,
mlyn,
melina,
kerithwyn,
nakedbee,
renenet,
amalthia,
arallara, everyone who came to my birthday party (and I apologize that I can't name you individually for I was very drunk -- you were all lovely), and everyone who attended the panels I modded (even the one where I didn't show up because I was in the wrong room). There's some other folks with whom I had significant interactions, but I can't remember their names/find their journals, but you are not forgotten. Except for the name part. That I probably did forget.

My life in a nutshell
Mar. 10th, 2012 07:38 pmOkay, the fact that I'm using an icon based on the poster of a movie that has a title that translates to "Hell" is not telling. I just really love that movie.
Lotta stuff going on.
-- Classic-Horror.com has been nominated for a Rondo Award for Best Website! If you like horror, you can vote here: http://rondoaward.com/rondo/rondos.html (voting ends April 1st at Midnight EST). For reasons, they only accept copy and pasted email ballots, so it's a bit of a slog to vote.
-- Working on my playlist for the Vividcon horror vidshow. I, uh, didn't realize how much work this would be, but I'm having fun discovering vids that I did not know existed before! If you know of any horror-related vids that you think would be awesome additions, please send them my way. I'm specifically having trouble finding vids made from older (pre-1980) and non-English (Eurohorror/Asian horror) sources. I also want to include at least one television vid that uses the source for creepy/scary purposes and maybe a multifandom vid.
-- On a related note, I am also looking for Premieres for my horror vidshow, because having more horror-related vids in this world cannot be a bad thing. Contact me at nate AT monkeyswithjetpacks.com.
-- I have a lot (a lot) of reviews to edit lately. Just a lot. Many. Need to work on those.
-- Talked with
mresundance extensively today. He is made of awesomeness.
-- Finally watched Sherlock 2x01. AWESOME. Need to see the rest, clearly, although Tumblr has spoiled me to some extent.
-- FUS DO RAH!
-- Ugh, need to do more clipping for my Club Vivid vid. Getting sick of the source already and I haven't even laid anything down in Final Cut. This cannot be a good sign.

Ten Things That Make Me Happy
Jul. 6th, 2010 09:46 amSo I had Social Fail at the July 4th party I went to, which I feel guilty about, so I'm taking a cue from
qkellie and listing some stuff that makes me happy.
![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
- Having an apparently telepathic connection with my wife, wherein we are already in agreement on propositions that neither of us have brought up (i.e. whether to leave our stuff in boxes after the recent fiasco).
- The best coffee in the Phoenix area is a flight of stairs away from my apartment.
- Classic-Horror.com is back and better than ever.
- Babylon 5 has been rocking more awesome into my world over the past month (just four episodes left in Season 4).
- I have great friends who I love and trust.
- My niece and I have a mutual admiration society going. She thinks I'm the bee's knees, man.
- Doctor Who Season 5. I wasn't sure about it at first (and I'm still not 100% on Matt Smith), but Moffat makes me go, "Rusty who?"
- Mandatory daily cuddles.
- Being a member of the horror blogging community. These are some of the most intelligent, friendly, and down-to-earth people I've ever dealt with.
- Watching "The Boy Who Left Home to Find Out About the Shivers" (an episode of Faerie Tale Theatre) for the first time in many, many years. It stars Peter MacNicol, Christopher Lee, David Warner, and Frank Zappa. Narration by Vincent Price. Fun times and just as delightful as I remember it being when I was much shorter.
CAR! ... GAME ON!
Oct. 13th, 2009 05:32 pmI'll make a more comprehensive post on the State of the Nate soon (tonight, probably, while avoiding doing my Shocktober reviews), but I have some very good news.
Or, more accurately, I will have a car starting Thursday. You see, my mom enters this raffle every year where the tickets are $100 each and the prizes are insanely cool. Last week she found out that, for the first time ever, she actually won something -- a new car. What kind of car doesn't matter, because she's trading it in for two used ones (one for her and one for her husband). The upshot for me is that I get her old 1999 Chevy Cavalier, which is in pretty good condition and should serve me well enough for tooling around town.
This is a great increase over my previous situation of not having a car and bumming a ride or asking people to pick me up from the light rail station every time I went to Tempe or Mesa.
Short version: Woot! CAR!

iPod Touch
Sep. 29th, 2009 12:25 pmMy new iPod Touch is completely awesome. I can use it as a remote control for iTunes on my MacBook Pro. I can keep track of my calendar. I can browse the web. I can check my email. I finally found a use for those silly Digital Copy discs that come with my Blu-rays. I can find discounts and coupons close to me using Greg Grunberg's Yowza!!
It apparently plays music as well.
The only real downside is that, not being an iPhone, all the 'net functionality is dependent on being in range of a wifi hub.

Still writing up my coverage of my panels from Comic-Con (to be posted on Classic-Horror.com), but I did want to say that I was extremely well-received, especially in my second panel, and that I let off a few choice zingers. The one that got the best reaction:
Audience member: "What's your guys opinion on gore porn?"
Me: "Let's not call it 'gore porn.' The word 'pornography' has a very specific definition and I, for one, would like to enjoy it."
I was giddy at the laughter and clapping. GIDDY.

and
I have no idea what I'm doing or how this is supposed to work, but it should be a blast! I'll try to have somebody take some pictures for posterity.

This weekend was the International Horror and Sci-Fi Film Festival in Chandler, AZ, which Classic-Horror.com co-sponsored. I still have to write-up my coverage, but it was pretty awesome. I met a lot of great folks. Didn't watch a lot of movies this time. Maybe next year.
Anyway, two very cool things happened that I wanted to share:
( Photographic evidence included )
Also, the C-H logo was all over the place. *glees*

So, two months ago, a reporter from the Chicago Tribune emailed me to see if he could interview me for a piece about a series of horror double bills playing in the Chicago area.
A week and a half later, he called me and I babbled for 45 minutes.
On August 8th, the piece was published.
There I am. In black and white. Sounding like a total geek.
Anybody from the Chicago area have a spare copy I can steal?

Saw The Dark Knight on IMAX tonight, thanks to quick typing skills in getting freebie tickets online.
Quickly, unexpected Jessica Harper late in the movie in a minor role.
That out of the way...
OM-FREAKING-GOD. Heath Ledger. OMG. This is everything the Joker should be. Just... brilliant. Absolute anarchy and madness. Brilliant.
Also, I feel like I just came out of two movies and that's a good thing. There's so much packed into the 2 1/2 hours here that it's hard for me to not just babble it out. I mean, this is... epic but it's also gritty and so very Gotham.
One minor nitpick, which I'll put behind a cut...

OMG Reading
Apr. 16th, 2008 03:26 pmSo. I'm reading again. Like voraciously devouring literature instead of thumbing through non-fiction. You can thank the girl I'm seeing as I pretty much got the third degree for not having read Orson Scott Card's "Ender's Game." My whole "but he's an asshole" argument was tossed out the window pretty soundly.
This book is So. Awesome. And freakin' hard to put down. I was staggering around like a zombie this morning because I lost track of time reading last night. I should be through the whole thing either tonight or tomorrow.
Spurred on by this development, I went to Borders again last night to grab some more Major Sci-Fi Classics that I'd missed -- "Neuromancer" by William Gibson, "Foundation" by Isaac Asimov, and "Speaker for the Dead" by Card. I also replaced by tattered, well-read copy of "Lord of the Flies" while I was at it. Also grabbed a copy of Card's "Empire," based on a recommendation from the girl I'm dating.
I'm rather pleased by this, really.

I Am Returned
Feb. 25th, 2008 11:27 amJesus, what a bash.
midnightfae's awesome secret-up-until-last-Monday birthday surprise was a three-day party with seven of my closest friends flying (or driving) in from around the country to hang. There was much booze, Rock Band, Clone High, Dr. Tran, British television, Youtube, and karaoke.
Plus, Versus. Every party that has Versus wins.
In attendance were (in order of arrival, roughly),
timjr,
theninthdoctor,
diannelamerc,
lizbetann,
faithfully_luna,
_jealousy_, and
airawyn (in addition to
midnightfae and myself).
So. Much. Fun. My friends are the awesomest.
Now I'm completely and totally wiped. Wowsers.
